In art, a “detail” is some little portion of a larger work — one corner of a painting, for example — that seems to tell a story, or have a life of its own. The cover of the Tor paperback edition of my novel Bretta Martyn, for example, is a detail from a piece of “stock art” my publisher had lying around somewhere. I’ve become very fond of it.

On my computer desktop at the moment — where one is likelier to find pictures of beautiful young females in various states of undress — I have a photograph of an exceedingly handsome weapon I can never own.

Only thirty or so of these weapons were manufactured 99 years ago, and perhaps ten remain. It’s the Savage Model of 1907, the only other pistol to survive …
