1. CIRCE'S ISLAND – MORNING. CLOSE-UP One of ODYSSEUS' MEN, lying on the ground, grimaces as he painfully squints one eye open. The bright sun beats down on his face.
No dialogue.
2. ODYSSEUS' MAN sits up, calling out to rouse the OTHER MEN scattered on the ground around. (There should be quite a few of them.) The island is no longer lush, but is a barren, rocky desert island.
ODYSSEUS' MAN 1
WAKE UP! It's morning!
ODYSSEUS' MAN 2
Where the hell are we?
3. As a group, ODYSSEUS' MEN march over the rocky landscape. They look frightened and filled with dread as they look warily around, almost dazzled by the light.
SAILOR 3
Wasn't there a woman…? I think I remember food…
ODYSSEUS' MAN 4
Too bad your gut can't navigate. We'd find port in no time.
ODYSSEUS' MAN 5
Gone all night… we'll be lucky if the captain hasn't sailed without us…
4. Stretching, almost laughing, Odysseus startles them as they come upon him and Circe in a crook in the rocks. She still sleeps, curled up against him in apparent contentment.
ODYSSEUS 6
Why so confused, boys? It's just the gods playing tricks with us again.
ODYSSEUS 7
It's all right to be entertained by a brief bit of nonsense, but let's not wallow in it.
5. Dragging a resistant Circe along, Odysseus jauntily starts marching off, as his baffled men throw each other puzzled glances and begin to haltingly follow. She's still not quite awake, but there's already terror growing in her eyes.
ODYSSEUS 8
To the ship. It's time to head home at last.
CIRCE 9
What? Wait! I can't leave!
