The Transcript For This Page

PANEL ONE (upper lefthand quarter of page)

Except for Bretta's word balloon, this panel is solid black.

Bretta: 'Damn dark. Where's that wrist light?'

----------------------------------------------------------------------

PANEL TWO (upper righthand quarter of page)

She finds the light. Suddenly, Bretta (we're looking over her
shoulder) is surrounded by a forest of arms thrust toward her, fists
clenched, thrustibles pointed at her face, their lenses gleaming. And
something funny -- maybe a tennis racket.

Voice: 'Right there will do nicely, wench!'

Another voice: 'Lose all them weapons you're atotin'!'

----------------------------------------------------------------------

PANEL THREE (lower half of page)

The liftdeck. In its center, the space elevator itself, looking
very grand and 18th century, like the outside of the ship. There's
substantial room around it, conical, wider near the 12-foot ceiling
than at the floor. Most of the deck is either unfinished or
embellished, and consists of what appears to be planking and
timbers. There should be support joists here and there at odd angles.

At the left side, Bretta has raised her crossbow. She has a
thrustible on each arm, and her Bowie knife, as well. She stands
defiant.

At the other end, at least a dozen men, clad in every manner of
dress imaginable. Some are sailors, some are gentry, some wear robes
and funny hats. They're all pointing thrustibles at Bretta.

Bretta: 'Come and get them.'

PANEL FOUR (upper lefthand quarter of page)

From Tarrant's cockpit. He's flying laterally, headed toward the
middle of the ship's mast, firing into the #-field and making big
colorful stains in it.

There's a little bit of energy coming back at him.

Narrative (Tarrant): 'I wasn't doing them much damage, but I was
almost disappointed by their surprisingly pathetic defense.'

----------------------------------------------------------------------

PANEL FIVE (upper righthand quarter of page)

Past the shoulders of one or two of the men, Bretta stands
defiant. The whole panel is shaking, and dust is filtering from the
rafters.

Bretta: 'My reinforcements are bombarding your ship. Surrender now,
and I'll be merci -- '

Voice: ' BRETTA?'
