ON THE SHIP’S DECK
Odysseus’ eyes flutter open. Finding himself bound hand and foot, he sits up awkwardly but is less angry than quizzical. Dannus stands over him tensely while Tinneus stands a little farther back, and is more wary. Other crew members seem to be split into two factions, Dannus’ faction holding back the others. A thick fog surrounds the ship now.
ODYSSEUS
So… what’s this then?
DANNUS
Sorry, captain, but we’ll never get home if the gods aren’t appeased. It’s you they’re after, it’s you we need to give them.
ODYSSEUS
I’d be careful, they get fussy about blood sacrifices. And who was it demanded plunder before we left Trojan shores? Who opted to raid Circe’s island? If anything, your greed’s what we’re paying for. If the gods follow any logic at all.
DANNUS
(outraged, draws sword)
It’s that kind of blasphemy I’m talking about!
ODYSSEUS
Well, you’re apparently captain now so it’s your call, Dannus. If I were you, first thing I’d do is ask Poseidon to lift this fog, so you can see how far past the pillars of Hercules we’ve sailed.
